Photograph in a great location at a beautiful time of year, receive personal attention in the field and learn how you can make your photographs even better. A key benefit of a location workshop is I can spend more time with participants out in the field. I'll be assisting attendees and answering questions while we're out photographing. I'm not running a workshop to build up my own image collection, but to help you improve yours. A maximum of ten participants allows me to work with everyone individually in the field. When not out photographing there will be ample time for critiques and presentations. See bottom of page for additional details and registration info.

Charleston is rich with photographic material from historic architecture to vibrant flowers to views of the ocean. It's a beautiful location in the spring with azaleas, irises and poppies blooming. Historic downtown has colorful houses, each with their own features worthy of being photographed: wrought iron designs, lamps and overflowing flower boxes. We'll visit Magnolia Gardens where we'll find azalea lined paths, spanish moss dangling from live oaks and bald cypresses with bright green spring leaves.

September in the Smokies is a great time for photographers, the big crowds are gone, but photo opportunities are plenty. As the seasons transition from summer to fall, fog is often present in the mornings. Rivers spotted with boulders cut through the forest create intimate landscapes. Flowing water and reflections lend themselves to abstract designs. From Cades Cove to Clingman's Dome, we'll be visiting the popular locations as well as lesser known ones.

Overview of Location Workshops
(local and international workshops have separate pages with details,
see links in schedule above)

Workshops run from Thursday evening through Sunday morning. On Thursday we'll meet for an orientation, presentation and have time for questions. The next two days will be a combination of going out to photograph and learning from presentations and critiques. On Sunday morning we'll go out photographing and will wrap things up by mid-morning. The locations I've selected are places I know well. I'm familiar with where to find the best subjects and scenes, as well as what the weather and lighting conditions to look for. We'll get to the right location at the right time to make the most of the light, land and subject.

In general, we'll be out photographing from sunrise to mid-morning and again from late afternoon until sunset. The exact shooting schedule and locations will depend on the weather and light. In between we'll have classroom time for presentations, discussions and critiques. Critiques are great way to learn how your images can be improved. Having critiques during the workshops allows you the opportunity to apply the feedback and try new techniques the next time we go out to photograph. Presentation topics will include composition & technique, equipment, image processing and organizing/managing your digital images. There will also be time for downloading/reviewing/editing images.

Equipment
Workshops are open to film and digital photographers. However, there will not be any film processing available on location. In order to participate in the critiques, film photographers can bring in scans of previous work. Alternatively, consider also bringing a digital camera for the purpose of taking photos for the critique.

Participants are expected to be familiar with their equipment and understand the aperture and shutter speed functions of their camera. An SLR camera (digital or film) is recommended. Compact digital ("point and shoot") cameras are welcome. However, please keep in mind that I would be able to help mainly with composition issues, since there are fewer exposure and creative controls with this type of camera. A tripod is also recommended. It's suggested that participants bring a laptop to use for processing and editing images for the critiques.

Payments
A $200 deposit required to hold your place. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to the start of the workshop. The workshop price is for instruction only, it does not include food, lodging, transportation, incidental expenses, etc.

Cancellations
-Full refunds will be given if registration is cancelled more than 30 days before the start of the workshop.
-No refunds will be given if the registration is cancelled less than 30 days before the workshop.
